What is your name and what condition-specific team do you work on?
My name is Elaine Bivens and I am on the Oncology Team. I am from Tuscaloosa, Alabama and I recently graduated with my Bachelor’s in Health Care Management from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Why do you work at Pack Health? What’s your favorite part of your job? Where do you get your inspiration?
I wanted to make a difference in others’ lives through health care. I love drawing from creativity and I felt that Pack Health was an innovative way for me to be able to accomplish this. I am naturally an encouraging person, so my favorite part of the job is being able to use that gift of encouragement with my members. I also enjoy hearing their confidence develop the more I engage them. My first and foremost inspiration comes from my belief in God; so, I apply my faith to everything I do. This allows me to do my job with a spirit of excellence (Colossians 3:23). I also draw inspiration from my late mother who passed in 2016. She was such a loving woman with a gentle spirit and I approach my members with that same level of character.
What’s your favorite healthy food and why? Share a recipe with us!
I love avocados. This has become one of my favorites because it’s kind of a blank canvas and it is very versatile. A quick recipe for avocados I make often is avocado toast BLT. Simply toast some bread, slice or spread the avocado on the toast, add sliced tomatoes, bacon, and salt and pepper to season it! It’s quick and filling and is great for breakfast, lunch, or a snack.
What’s your favorite way to stay active and why?
Dancing is my favorite way to stay active! Dance has always been a huge part of my life. I’ve danced on various dance teams from middle school through my freshman year of college. I currently dance at church, with a local R&B artist here in Birmingham, and I host dance fitness classes at various dance studios in Birmingham through my own business that I started in September 2017 in honor of my mother called FAY’D 2 Fitness. So not only is it a passion of mine, but it helps me to stay active and fit!
How else do you practice self-care?
Aside from dance, my go-tos for self-care include journaling/poetry, reading books, listening to music, and going to the gym.
What advice do you have for someone just joining the program?
My advice to an individual just joining the program would be to have an open mind. Also, start where you are because we [Health Advisors] will meet you where you are.

One member that I have, came in through the weight management program. Initially, she was a little inhibited about her ability to achieve her weight loss goal and is consistent with her weekly goals. The biggest concern was having the time to work on her goals and still have time and energy to spend with her daughter. Over time, she and I worked together and brainstormed some ideas on how she could overcome this barrier. She has now successfully gotten her daughter involved with exercise to where it is fun for both of them. They enjoy doing Zumba, Yoga (which the daughter affectionately calls “yogurt”), and other dance exercises. Having this positive impact on her daughter has helped boost the member’s confidence to reach her overall goal, which was to lose 10 pounds. This member is only 6 weeks into the program and has already exceeded her overall goal by dropping 11 pounds!
