Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are genetic diseases that are triggered for various reasons. Science shows one has to be predisposed or born with an inherent gene. Once the gene is turned on there is no off, or cure. The gene expression sends signals throughout the body which causes the immune system to go haywire. It’s like a snowball rolling down a mountain except the mountain never ends. If you don’t seek treatment, the problem gets progressively worse.

Where to start?

Although many have successfully used diet to control their disease, many will fail. So what do you do if you’re on the fence about medication or a more natural approach?

Well here’s the thing, it really depends on your quality of life – the severity of your disease. So our disease is categorized in four ways: mild, moderate, severe, and very severe.

I’m no doctor, nor do I pretend to be. See your doctor for this determination. Once that is established you can decide which approach is best for you and your family. This is a very serious disease even at the moderate stage. Our disease progressively leads to other problems like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, depression, and even cancer. Studies have shown only 3% pasi or body involvement, our disease can greatly impact our “Quality of Life”.

My Journey with Psoriasis

So here is what I did, here is how I’m “Overcoming Psoriasis.”  With the help of my doctors, we sized up this disease. At the time, we only had three categories and I was “severe”. After failing diet (Dr. Pagano’s healing psoriasis) I became desperate. I spent thousands of my own money on numerous snake oil products and OTC creams and ointments. It’s taken me years to find the dimmer switch for this disease.

Science is amazing and none of you in this day and age have to experience what I had to go through. We have so many options these days!

Our bodies are programmed to heal themselves. The response we are seeing is a genetic malfunction (while flaring). I’m happy to say that today I’m 95% clear and my joints are pain-free, thanks to a monthly medication prescribed by my doctor. I also apply nutrition, exercise, and mental health care counseling.

This is my journey – yours might be completely different.  There are many roads to control, and it won’t cost you a fortune.

What YOU can do

So yes yes yes try diet and lifestyle changes.  Avoid inflammatory foods, make sure you’re getting enough exercise, take steps to reduce stress, but never forget to communicate with your care team.
